Without any further delay, here you go.

Seven Pounds movie review

The new Will smith movie, Seven Pounds, is something that you might not expect during the Christmas Season: an honestly powerful and moving movie experience. Smith has taken a step away from his more familiar routine of playing the relaxed and amiable character. Instead here he portrays a man with a more exposed and imperfect air of humanity.

To be honest, recently Smith has chosen a seeries of roles that have relied as much on gimmickry and contrived sentimentality as they have sincere character development. With Seven Pounds Smith is challenging his audience to accept an intense and provocative movie experience around the time of year when many would rather just be losing themselves in escapist entertainment.

At its core, Seven Pounds is really about the inherent goodness in humanity and the personal crusade of one individual, an IRS agent named Ben Thomas (Smith) who is determined to reward the goodness of seven troubled strangers. Smith portrays the character as a good samaritan who gets himself involved in the lives of these seven people. Again these people all appear to be decent individuals who happen to each be going through troubling times or suffering with serious problems.

Remember however that this is no Frank Capra kind of feel good movie.

It might surprise some that this movie even made it to the screen with this screenplay, especially considering that it was a first time project for writer Grant Nieporte who is more well known for his work in television. this is a powerful script however and that must have been realized by someone at the higher levels in Hollywood. This script has integrity and is very clever. Nieporte succeeds in avoiding the easier route of over-sentimentality and presents the viewer with a challenging and demanding story.

Seve Pounds director, Gabriele Muccino, also directed smith in The Pursuit of Happyness and may surprise some by not giving in to sentimentality here which is something that he has been accused of doing in the past with such works as Happyness.

Rosario Dawson also comes through with a convincing and honest performance as one of the troubled individuals in Ben Thomas's life. There is a pleasing chemistry at work here between Dawson and Smith. Woody Harrelson and Barry Pepper also contribute to the strength of this film with their proven acting skills on display here. Both succeed in adding more personality to the tortured drama.

I will resisit the urge to give away the ending of the Seven Pounds movie. When you watch this movie you can't help but get the feeling that this is a very personal project for both the star Smith and the director Muccino - that this is the movie that they both intended to make at the outset; it definitely does not come across as a strictly commercial studio venture. All in all, Seven Pounds succeeds in providing the audience with a challenging and thought-provoking moviegoing experience.

****

On a final note, I have recently come across a website that is dedicated to updating Will Smith fans on the status of his upcoming movie projects. Since the site claims that it will be focusing on his movie work and not so much on his life as an A-list Hollywood celebrity, I would like to tentatively recommend it. Not ten days ago I went on my mini rant about how slow Columbia, the studio behind the upcoming Seven Pounds movie was about getting it's trailer out there to help promote the movie, and guess what?

Yep, we got ourselves a shiny new Seven Pounds trailer, and this time it is a legit trailer - not a(albeit well made) fan trailer. This new Seven Pounds trailer runs just under two and a half minutes long in length and is careful to not give away as much of the plot to the upcoming will Smith movie as sites such as mine have already gone and done. sorry, but if you didnt want to spoil things for your selves, would you really be on the internet searching for Seven Pounds movie info in the first place? C'mon.

Anyway, the movie trailer is rather bland for my tastes - I guess I was expecting a trailer to outline things a bit more concretely, but whatever. Here it is BUT please read on after you watch it for an interesting tidbit!

Something else very interesting about the release of this trailer: I believe it may have already been pulled.

My reason for saying this is the following: The first day I heard about it coming online, I went to Youtube right away and viewed it. Roughly one day later, I went and added it to this here website of mine from Youtube and I thought that that was that. Not so much. Less than aday later, the video feed was unavailable from the source code I had used /embedded on my page. I went to Youtube to find a more reliable source and found that the video was unavailable there!

Wow.

Anyway, I searched and soon enough I found an alternative souce. One thing about the internet: if at first you dont succeed in your search, try, try again, lol. I dont know how long this one will stay available but for now it is here for your enjoyment. I should mention that I have seen some mention about Columbia studios deciding to pull the trailer from major sites, so... take from that what you will; was the studio having second thoughts about the marketing of the movie and was that the reason for going without any trailer for so long in the first place? Yeah, UI know that it is not really important in the grand scheme of all things celluloid but you just got to wonder if the studio is a bit nervous about how they should handle such a brooding storyline with such a big bankable name as Will Smith behind it - especially when the early talk of a possible Oscar nomination for Smith is already there in the background. I am sure that Columbia is being careful not to screw up the promotion of this one. Personally, I just think they should put the trailer out there and let it ride. Ultimately, Will Smith is the reason this film will sink or swim, not the suits at the studio...S W Bhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05058471456603964624noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6081007412702128153.post-44833610286313220942008-09-18T19:57:00.001-07:002008-09-18T23:49:00.813-07:00Seven Pounds movie: September, and we're still waiting for a trailer?Well it is now September and I cannot believe that we are still -yes still waiting for even one lousy stinking teaser trailer for this next will Smith movie! I don't know what the studio (Columbia?) is waiting for, or if it is maybe Will Smith's own production company (Escape Artists) that are holding off on releasing anything yet, but either way it is a bit baffling. This is pretty much a dead zone time between summer and Winter film releases and as good a time as any to get your trailer into the theaters to maybe get some buzz building for a projects not-too-distant release. But whatever. I mean what do I know? I am not a big time studio that knows how this should be done, I am just an average moviegoer who wants to feel even a spark or glimmer of anticipation towards the next Will Smith movie. Maybe they are not sure about how the trailer to something like this would come across, or maybe they just want their movie to make less money than Punisher: Warzone, this December and this is one of the ways they know how to do this?

Anyway, until something more legit comes down the pike, here is afan made teaser trailer for the Seven Pounds movie that has been making the rounds on Youtube recently. I hope it will satisfy your seven pounds of hunger for now.

S W Bhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05058471456603964624noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6081007412702128153.post-8983183918238970212008-08-28T23:13:00.000-07:002008-08-28T23:30:36.158-07:00SEVEN POUNDS - WILL SMITH: A light weight plot synopsis.I don't have a lot of plot information on the upcoming Will smith drama Seven Pounds, but I thought it was about time to share what I have gleaned about this movie from surfing the interweb. At this time I don't even think that there is an official Seven Pounds movie trailer available so what I have so far is from piecing together things from different sources. The plot of Seven Pounds centers around a depressed IRS Agent (played by Smith) who has been suffering from suicidal tendencies since being involved in somwe sort of tragic occurrence that cost the lives of (seven?) innocent bystanders. Haunted by this, Smith resolves to help turn around the fortunes of seven random people - seven total strangers, after which he will go ahead and end his own life by committing suicide. His plans get sidetracked however when he meets and falls in love with a woman with a heart condition, played by Rosario Dawson. the film also costars Woody Harrelsson and Barry Pepper, as well as featuring the movie debut of Connor Cruise ( the adopted son of Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman).

Seven Pounds has a release date of December 19th in North America.S W Bhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05058471456603964624noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6081007412702128153.post-67228766466762661992008-08-10T15:44:00.000-07:002008-08-10T16:01:32.622-07:00Will Smith movie angers woman ... and her dog?I haven't really heard anything of note yet about Will Smith's next movie project, Seven Pounds, but I did stumble upon this short clip from TMZ.com regarding a woman who lives on the street where the movie is currently being shot. It seems that she is quite upset with all of the noise and distraction that comes with life around a movie set. She has even taken to putting up some 'interesting' signs in front of her property, too. She has been offered some monetary compensation for the inconvenience, however it sounds like it wasn't enough.

It's hard to tell if the dog is angry, too.

Here is the link to see for yourself: http://link.brightcove.com/services/link/bcpid353549946/bctid1522868662S W Bhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05058471456603964624noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6081007412702128153.post-36438599320882209852008-08-09T15:44:00.001-07:002008-08-09T15:48:19.164-07:00Will mith's Seven Pounds is coming.Until more is known about this Will Smith movie, here is a trailer from his current Summer blockbuster movie, Hancock.

Enjoy.

S W Bhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05058471456603964624noreply@blogger.com0
